Kitchen Remodeling in Redwood City
62 percent of Redwood City homes predate 1980. Most kitchens need new circuits.
Redwood City requires two 20 amp countertop circuits, GFCI on every kitchen outlet and dedicated circuits for the major appliances. We remodel kitchens here with the electrical, plumbing and permit work under one license, and the panel checked before cabinets are ordered.

New layout, or the same footprint?
Refacing cabinets needs no building permit in Redwood City. Replacing cabinets and counters in a new layout needs an electrical permit for the outlets, and new plumbing, circuits or a vented hood add their own permits. Interior remodels can still be approved at a One-Stop appointment.
Countertop circuits
At least two 20 amp small appliance circuits, no point on the counter more than 24 inches from an outlet, outlets no more than 48 inches apart and none face-up.
Appliance circuits
Dedicated circuits for the dishwasher, disposal, microwave and compactor, AFCI on 120 volt circuits and GFCI on every kitchen outlet, including 240 volt dishwashers.
Islands
An island outlet is no longer required under the 2025 code, but provisions for adding one later are. If installed, one outlet serves the whole island.
Range hood
A vented hood needs a mechanical permit, must end 3 feet from openings into the building and cannot use flexible corrugated duct.
Plumbing
New faucets at 1.8 gpm, a dishwasher air gap above the sink rim, and older fixtures elsewhere replaced where SB 407 requires it.
Lighting and alarms
High-efficacy lighting, under-cabinet lights on their own switch, and hardwired, interconnected smoke and CO alarms when ceilings are opened.
PERMIT TRIGGERS
What each kitchen change needs.
From Redwood City's Kitchen, Bath and Laundry Remodel Requirements. Several common changes carry their own permit, and a few are exempt.
| Permit | Detail | |
|---|---|---|
| Refacing existing cabinets | No building permit | Same boxes, new doors and fronts |
| New cabinet and counter layout | Electrical permit | Outlets must meet current spacing |
| Outlet or switch swap, same location | No electrical permit | Like-for-like devices only |
| Recirculating hood replaced | No mechanical permit | No outside vent |
| Vented range hood | Mechanical permit | Ends 3 ft from openings, no flex duct |
| New or moved circuits and plumbing | Electrical and plumbing permits | Inspected at rough-in |

WHAT HOLDS UP REDWOOD CITY KITCHENS
Problems Redwood City homeowners run into, and how we plan around them.
From the city's permit, inspection and remodel pages, and the age of its housing.
The existing panel cannot carry two counter circuits plus appliance circuits.
A load calculation is done at the site visit; with most homes built before 1980, panel space is checked before cabinets are ordered.
A rough-in inspection is a week away, and drywall waits.
Rough-in requests go in online as soon as each trade is ready, since the city schedules 3 to 8 days ahead.
A new hood is installed with flex duct and fails inspection.
Hood ducts are smooth and planned with their 3 foot clearance from windows and doors before cabinets are set.
Smoke alarm rules expand the scope once ceilings come down.
Hardwired, interconnected alarms are included from the start when the ceiling or attic gives access for wiring.
Weekend catch-up days are not allowed.
The schedule is built on weekday hours, with any weekend work requested 30 days ahead.

Do I need a permit to remodel a kitchen in Redwood City?
Yes, for any new or altered electrical, plumbing, mechanical or building work. The exceptions in the city's remodel requirements are refacing cabinets, replacing a recirculating hood that has no outside vent, and swapping outlets or switches in the same locations.
How many circuits does a kitchen need in Redwood City?
At least two 20 amp small appliance circuits for the countertop and wall outlets, plus dedicated circuits for the dishwasher, disposal, microwave and compactor, under CEC 210.11 and 210.19 as listed in the city's January 2026 requirements. All 120 volt, 15 and 20 amp kitchen circuits need AFCI protection.
Does a kitchen island need an outlet in Redwood City?
No, not under the 2025 code the city enforces. Island and peninsula outlets are no longer required, but provisions must be made for adding one later, and when one is installed, a single outlet covers the island regardless of size.
Do I need a permit for a new range hood in Redwood City?
Yes, if it vents outside. A mechanical permit is required to replace a hood with an outside air vent, the duct must end at least 3 feet from openings and flexible corrugated duct is not allowed. A recirculating hood with no outside vent needs no mechanical permit.
How long does a kitchen remodel permit take in Redwood City?
About 3 to 4 weeks for residential alterations, according to the city's published review times, or the same day when the remodel qualifies for a One-Stop appointment with a complete set of plans.
Are there rebates for upgrading a panel during a kitchen remodel in Redwood City?
Yes, when the panel serves new heat pump equipment. Redwood City pays up to $500 for a panel upgrade required for a heat pump or heat pump water heater, and WestLight Energy adds a $1,000 panel bonus with its own heat pump rebates. Neither program lists an induction cooktop rebate.
