Smart Lighting

Lutron Lighting Control Installation in the Bay Area. Caséta, RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks.

Whole-home lighting control from one licensed C-10 electrician: wiring, keypads, dimmers, LED compatibility checks and scene setup. Marin, the East Bay, San Francisco, the Peninsula and the South Bay.

What This Is

Lighting that responds to the room, not the toggle.

Smart lighting is the highest-leverage piece of any smart-home install. It is the layer the household interacts with every day — every walk through a doorway, every "movie tonight," every late-night kitchen trip. Get it right and the rest of the smart-home experience inherits the quality. Get it wrong (the bulbs flicker, the app times out, the dimmer hums) and the household stops trusting any of it.

YKCA installs and programs Lutron Caséta for retrofits, and does the wiring, panels, keypads and dimmers for RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks whole-home systems, which a Lutron-certified dealer programs. We size every dimmer to its actual load, verify LED compatibility before turnover, and program the scenes with the homeowner present so the "Movie" button does what they actually want it to do.

Scope

What is included in a smart-lighting install.

Same crew specs the gear, pulls the load calc, and programs the system before turnover. Single bid, single accountable contractor.

Caseta Dimmers + Pico Remotes

Wireless wall dimmers replace existing switches one-for-one. Pico remotes mount anywhere — wall, bedside, coffee table — and trigger scenes without re-wiring.

RadioRA 3 / HomeWorks (whole-home)

Whole-home control for larger residences: in-wall keypads, occupancy and daylight sensors, motorized shade coordination. We wire and install the hardware; a Lutron-certified dealer programs the system.

Scene Programming

Scenes are designed with the household around room activities; their number depends on the system and needs.

Smart Bulb Integration

For supported smart bulbs: keep bulb power on and use compatible wall controls that send commands. Verify bulb, controller and platform compatibility.

LED Compatibility Verification

We size the dimmer to the load, confirm bulb compatibility, and replace mismatched LED + dimmer pairs that cause flicker, hum, or pop-on issues.

Ecosystem Pairing

Lutron bridge paired with Alexa, Google Home, and / or Apple HomeKit. Voice control and cross-vendor routines tested before turnover.

Equipment We Spec

Lutron Caséta, RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks, selected per room.

Brand-agnostic where it matters (smart bulbs, third-party Pico-compatible switches), Lutron-loyal where it counts (the dimmer controlling the actual load on your circuit).

Caseta Diva Smart Dimmer

Retrofit standard, neutral or no-neutral options

Caseta Smart Fan Speed Control

PD-FSQN: 4 speeds plus off; verify fan compatibility.

Pico Smart Remote

Wall-mount or tabletop, scenes / dim / off

RadioRA 3 Sunnata Dimmer

In-wall, multi-location, occupancy-sensor capable

HomeWorks QSX Keypad

In-wall touch keypad, programmable button layouts

Sunnata Companion Switch

Multi-location control with a compatible Sunnata main device; wiring requirements depend on the exact model.

Programmed Scenes

Scenes planned around how the household uses each room.

Default scenes are pointless — every household uses lighting differently. After installation, we walk through your daily routine with you and adjust scenes for cooking, reading and bedtime, including any hallway lighting you need.

Common starting set: Welcome (entry + hallway full), Cooking (kitchen full, dining 60%), Dinner (kitchen 40%, dining warm 80%, accent on), Movie (entertainment 15%, kitchen off, hallway path 30%), Bed (everything off except hallway 10%), Goodbye (everything off, hallway 100% for 60s then off).

FAQ

Smart lighting questions, straight answers.

HomeWorks is Lutron's top-tier whole-home system for lighting, motorized shades and sensors, run from a central processor. It suits large homes and new construction, and it is sold and programmed through Lutron-certified HomeWorks dealers. YKCA, as a licensed C-10 electrician, wires and installs the panels, keypads and dimmers for it.

RadioRA 3 is mostly wireless and fits existing homes without opening walls for new control wiring. HomeWorks adds wired lighting panels, larger systems and premium keypad lines such as Palladiom and Alisse, which makes it the usual choice for estates and new builds.

Caséta supports up to 75 devices on one Smart Hub and suits a few rooms or a simple retrofit. RadioRA 3 suits whole-home control, with engraved keypads, more devices and shade integration. The wiring, neutrals and number of controls at your house decide which one fits.

Yes, when the bulb is marked dimmable and appears on the dimmer's LED compatibility list. A mismatched bulb and dimmer causes flicker, hum or bulbs that pop on at low levels, and the fix is a compatible bulb or a different dimmer, set to the right low-end trim.

Caséta works with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple Home through the Caséta Smart Hub. For RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks, the supported platforms depend on the processor and its software version, and they are confirmed before the system is quoted.

Yes. Marin, Contra Costa and Alameda counties are in the YKCA service area, including Novato, Walnut Creek, San Ramon and Pleasanton, along with San Francisco, the Peninsula and the South Bay.

Per room and per device, after an on-site walk-through. The written quote lists controls, wiring changes and setup separately, and it arrives within 3 business days of the visit.

Frequently asked project questions

Work through the difficult decisions.

Explore the causes, choices and practical next steps behind common project questions.

Can smart lighting be installed if the switch box has no neutral?

A listed no-neutral control can suit some lighting circuits, but its load requirements still apply. Have conductor functions and the fixture identified before choosing that control, a supported remote, or a wiring change.

Do I need two smart dimmers for a three-way circuit?

Not necessarily. Many products use one main dimmer and an approved companion, mechanical switch, or remote. The correct arrangement depends on the exact model, wiring, load, and required functions.
