Panel Upgrades for EV Charging
An EV Charger Does Not Choose the Panel Upgrade
Before replacing a panel for an EV charger, establish the charging need and the actual electrical constraint. YKCA compares the existing supply, a suitable charging configuration and any justified panel or utility service work.
What & Why
Find out whether the limit is capacity, space or condition.
A full breaker layout, an undersized supply and equipment in poor condition require different responses. A site assessment should identify which problem is present rather than treating every EV project as a 200A or 400A upgrade.
Compare a charging setting that meets your driving needs, suitable load management and any applicable utility-approved alternative with a defined upgrade. PG&E lists meter socket adapters as an option for eligible projects; eligibility and the selected equipment still require review.
Useful details for the first assessment
Charging needs
Vehicle, daily mileage and time parked
Panel information
Location, labels, available spaces and known concerns
Future loads
Confirmed appliance or additional EV plans
Utility conditions
Serving utility and any existing project application
Project Scope
A clear scope for this part of the charging project.
Agree on the equipment, electrical work and completion checks before authorizing installation or repair.
Load assessment
Review the actual charging configuration and existing loads. Document the basis for any capacity conclusion.
Panel condition and spaces
Evaluate equipment condition and distribution needs separately from demand on the service.
Alternative configurations
Compare supported lower-power or load-managed charging where appropriate. Describe operating limits and any equipment requirements.
Defined upgrade scope
If replacement is needed, distinguish the panel, meter equipment, conductors and any utility-side work.
Permit and utility sequence
Identify approvals, inspection releases and outage coordination needed for the agreed installation.
Charging and closeout
Complete the panel and charger-related checks, circuit labeling and project records. Record any later work excluded from the current scope.

Before You Choose
Compare the option that resolves the identified constraint.
Compare the available choices against the vehicle, property and charging schedule.
| Question | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Existing service with a suitable charging setting | Whether it meets daily driving needs and the electrical assessment. |
| Load-managed charging | Compatibility, monitored supply and documented operating behavior. |
| Panel replacement or redistribution | The space, condition or connection issue addressed by the work. |
| Utility service change | The demand that justifies it and utility requirements for the property. |
Estimate Planning
What changes the electrical scope and cost?
Ask for the actual configuration, included work and any conditions that still need site confirmation.
- The actual service and panel arrangement
- Required equipment relocation or utility construction
- Grounding, routing, access and restoration work
- Outage planning, permits and inspection coordination
FAQ
Panel Upgrades for EV Charging: questions before work begins.
Does a 100A service automatically prevent home EV charging?
No automatic conclusion follows from that rating alone. Evaluate the existing loads, charging need and any suitable controls. The final arrangement must be supported by the assessment and applicable requirements.
Is a panel swap the same as increasing the utility service?
No. The proposal should identify what changes on the property and whether the utility supply also needs work. A higher number on proposed equipment does not establish available utility capacity.
Can load management avoid the upgrade?
It may be an option when a supported system addresses the actual capacity constraint. It does not repair damaged equipment or solve every space or connection issue. Compare both the operating behavior and installed scope.
Can a meter socket adapter work here?
PG&E describes adapters as an alternative for eligible solar, storage or EV projects. The property, equipment and current utility requirements must be reviewed; the option is not a promise that every panel can remain.
How long would the power be off?
Confirm the outage sequence with the participants for the actual project. Utility scheduling, inspections and site readiness affect reconnection. A general installation estimate is not a guaranteed outage window.
