Holiday Lighting Design Layout, Color & Installation Planning
Turn a reference photo or a rough idea into a defined holiday lighting brief. Review the building, viewing angles, color palette, outdoor power and installation constraints before selecting the final scope.

Outdoor Lighting Design Consultation
Make the important design decisions before installation.
A holiday lighting design consultation helps when you know the mood you want but not which features to illuminate. A simple roofline, a balanced entry and a brightly wrapped tree can each become the focal point. The right combination depends on the property, the viewing distance and your preference for a restrained or more elaborate display.
Bring a few reference images and explain what you like about them: bulb size, warm-white tone, color pattern, tree density or the way the entrance stands out. YKCA can review those preferences alongside the real mounting surfaces, access and power locations. This connects the visual concept with the practical installation scope.
Agree on the deliverables before the visit. A consultation may focus on a verbal site review, a marked property photo, a layout brief or an installation quote. Renderings, formal drawings, product samples and HOA submission materials should be specifically listed if required. A concept image is a planning aid; it does not guarantee an exact nighttime appearance.
Use the resulting brief for residential seasonal lighting, a commercial display or permanent LED planning.
Bring to the Design Review
- Ground-level photos of all desired areas
- Reference images with notes on what you like
- A target budget range and priorities
- HOA, landlord or property design rules
- Desired dates and existing equipment details
Project Scope
Resolve five parts of the lighting brief.
The most useful design review connects appearance, operation and a realistic installation scope.
Viewpoints & Focal Points
Choose what should stand out from the street, driveway and entry. Identify a primary feature, then decide which supporting areas improve the composition.
Color & Brightness
Compare warm-white and multicolor approaches against the building's finishes. Discuss brightness, motion and the effect on neighboring windows.
Coverage & Priorities
Mark the roofline sections, trees and entry features in order of importance. This makes it easier to reduce or phase the scope without losing the main idea.
Power & Access Review
Locate existing outdoor power and likely equipment positions. Flag roof height, slopes or surfaces that may require a different installation approach.
Deliverables & Approval
Agree on the notes, layout or quote needed after the consultation. Identify who approves the concept and what information they require to make that decision.

How It Works
Move from inspiration to a scope you can approve.
Keep the discussion focused on the decisions that determine the finished display and the work involved.
Define the Brief
Share the property type, preferred look, target date and budget priorities. Confirm consultation scope and any fee before the appointment.
Walk the Property
Review the important viewpoints, mounting areas, access and power. Separate essential features from optional additions.
Compare the Options
Evaluate a focused layout and any broader alternatives. Clarify the equipment assumptions and any electrical or access work that changes the scope.
Document the Direction
Record the chosen concept, open decisions and agreed deliverables. Obtain the required owner or property approvals before installation is scheduled.
Design Decisions with Practical Value
A useful concept answers more than the color question.
Use the review to identify what you want to see, what you need to operate and what the installer needs to know.
A Clear Focal Point
Choose whether the roofline, entrance or a landscape feature leads the display. Supporting lights should reinforce that choice rather than compete everywhere.
A Consistent Palette
Mixing existing lights with new sets can produce visibly different whites. Review the actual products or samples when matching color is important.
Neighbor Consideration
Discuss how much movement and brightness you want after dark. Include a shutoff time and a quieter everyday setting where the system supports it.
Visible Starting & Ending Points
Decide where each illuminated line begins and ends. Partial elevations can look intentional when those transitions are included in the plan.
A Scope That Can Change
Identify optional trees or secondary rooflines separately. You can then adjust the proposal without redesigning the primary display.
Seasonal or Permanent
UL treats temporary holiday products differently from year-round products. Decide the intended use early, because it changes equipment selection and the installation plan.

How can a lighting design reduce glare into neighboring homes?
Review neighboring sightlines, direct source visibility, brightness, animation and hours. Use suitable placement, shielding and zoning where supported, then test the intended scene. Local rules and property requirements still need review; no single preset guarantees every situation is acceptable.

Approve actual seasonal strings together, then compare samples from the delivered product families and lots before hanging them. Keep the accepted sample and labeled spares by zone. Similar warm-white labels do not establish a match, and substitutions need another comparison.
