Commercial · LED lighting upgrades

Commercial LED Retrofits, Better lighting starts with the existing fixture.

Plan a fluorescent-to-LED conversion around light quality, fixture condition and the way your building operates. Compare replacement lamps, retrofit kits and complete fixtures before ordering.

Design concept

Project planning

Build the retrofit scope from an inventory of the existing lighting and the result you want to achieve.

The starting point

Change the lighting, not just the wattage.

A commercial LED lighting upgrade should improve the light people work under. Uneven illumination, glare, inconsistent color and difficult maintenance deserve attention alongside energy use. A lower-wattage replacement is not automatically an equivalent lighting result.

For a fluorescent-to-LED conversion, the existing fixture housing, ballast or driver, wiring and controls affect the available options. Review a representative area before committing to a building-wide product selection.

Scope of work

The checks that make an LED retrofit useful.

1

Inventory the installed lighting

Record fixture types, quantities, mounting conditions and the spaces they serve. Note failed parts, uneven light and difficult access.

2

Compare retrofit options

Assess LED lamps, listed retrofit kits and complete fixture replacement against the condition of the existing equipment and the intended lighting result.

3

Review the light quality

Consider useful light at the task, distribution, glare and color consistency. A sample installation can reveal problems that product photos cannot.

4

Coordinate the controls

Check dimming and sensor compatibility with the selected equipment. Identify any control work and project-specific energy-code requirements before procurement.

5

Sequence the installation

Plan access above ceilings, ladders or lifts, occupied areas and disposal of removed equipment. Identify which lighting must remain available during each phase.

6

Check and document

Confirm operation after installation, record selected product models and update the maintenance information. Review operating schedules with the facility team.

Project handoff

Make future replacements straightforward.

The handoff should explain what was installed and how it is intended to operate.

Fixture schedule

Record product models and where each replacement type was installed.

Controls information

Identify dimming interfaces, sensors and agreed settings that affect operation.

Maintenance references

Keep product instructions and applicable manufacturer warranty information accessible.

Project records

Retain the agreed installation checks and any required permit or acceptance documentation.

Project scenarios

Three ways to approach the same ceiling.

Select an option after reviewing the existing equipment, access and desired lighting quality.

Lamp replacement

LED tubes or lamps

Check the complete assembly

A compatible replacement may retain more of the existing fixture. Confirm the product's installation method and compatibility; similar-looking lamps can require different electrical arrangements.

Fixture retrofit

Listed retrofit kits

Retain a suitable housing

A kit can replace internal lighting components while keeping the housing. Review the kit's suitability, light distribution and control interface for the specific fixture.

Full replacement

New LED fixtures

Reconsider layout and output

Damaged equipment, poor distribution or a changed room use may support complete replacement. Include ceiling repairs, mounting details and access in the comparison.

Energy savings and payback depend on actual wattage, operating hours, controls and project cost. Confirm those inputs before relying on a savings estimate.

FAQ

Before converting commercial lighting to LED.

Several approaches are available, including replacement lamps, retrofit kits and new fixtures. The choice depends on the existing equipment and desired result. The U.S. Department of Energy's retrofit guide describes the tradeoffs for fluorescent troffers.

No. Products use different installation arrangements. Confirm the exact lamp, existing ballast or driver and manufacturer's instructions before defining the conversion. This assessment belongs in the electrical scope rather than a purchase based only on lamp length.

Compare the light distribution and useful output, not only watts or a claimed equivalent. Review a representative area and the tasks performed there. A mock-up is particularly useful where ceiling height, screens or reflective surfaces affect comfort.

That depends on the selected lamps or drivers and the control system. Include compatibility checks in the specification. If controls also need to change, review the lighting-controls scope with the fixture selection.

A reliable estimate needs the existing and proposed input wattage, fixture count, operating hours and applicable rate. Program availability and eligibility also need separate confirmation before purchase. No fixed saving or rebate is assumed in the project scope.

Plan a sequence by room or lighting zone and confirm work hours, access and any temporary operating arrangements. Procurement consistency matters: mixing products across phases can leave different color or dimming behavior in adjacent spaces.
