Restoration / Belongings
Know what leaves. Know where it goes.
Furniture, clothing, family records and everyday essentials each need a decision during restoration. A pack-out plan records what is moved, its condition, its destination and how it will return. The move should make repairs possible while keeping your belongings traceable.
Start here
Give every group of items a destination
Keep accessible
List items needed during displacement or repairs, such as essential records and work or school materials. Agree how they can be retrieved safely and kept separate from the repair area.
Assess or clean
Flag wet, smoke-affected or potentially contaminated items. Record who will decide on treatment or specialist handling before they join other stored belongings.
Move and store
Identify the provider, destination, item labels and access arrangements. Storage conditions, transport, charges and any coverage for loss or damage should be agreed in writing.
A familiar situation
The living room must be emptied. You still need to live.
Illustrative scenario
Imagine the floor needs repair but the room holds a sofa, a work desk, school supplies and family albums. “Move everything” is not enough of a plan. Identify what you need during the work, what requires specialist attention and what can be stored until the room is ready.
Contents record
A useful inventory follows the item
| Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Room and item or box ID | Connects each entry to its starting location. |
| Condition and photo reference | Records the condition before a move or treatment. |
| Handling decision and approval | Shows what was agreed and who authorized it. |
| Destination and return status | Keeps the move and return traceable. |
Agree on the move before the truck arrives
A written scope should separate packing, loading, transport, cleaning, storage and the return trip. Identify fragile, valuable or specialist items individually. Ask how additions, partial returns and a longer repair schedule would change the work and charges.
Plan the return while planning the departure
Choose a contact who can confirm when rooms are ready and check returned items against the inventory. Note missing or changed items at the handoff. Keep receipts and records for your insurer, and ask your adjuster about coverage; a contents estimate does not establish what the policy will pay.
Confirm the provider and facility for your project
Discuss contents coordination with YKCA alongside the restoration scope. Any specialist contents company, storage location and storage conditions need to be identified for your job. This page does not promise a YKCA warehouse, a particular storage environment or a fixed storage price.
Questions before work begins
A clearer next step
Does pack-out mean everything has to leave the house?
Not necessarily. The damage, work boundaries and available unaffected space determine the options. Ask for the reason behind each proposed move and how items remaining on site will be protected.
Who decides whether an item is discarded?
Agree on the evaluation and authorization process before disposal. Keep the record of the proposed decision, condition and photos when safe. Discuss insurer documentation requirements without keeping hazardous items in occupied space.
How much will storage cost?
The provider, volume, handling, conditions and duration affect the scope. Request an itemized proposal that explains ongoing charges and what happens if the repair schedule changes.
