Restaurant Electrical, Build the scope from the equipment schedule.

Coordinate kitchen equipment circuits, refrigeration, lighting and point-of-sale connections around the restaurant layout. Resolve power requirements before appliances arrive.

Project planning

Bring the kitchen plan and current equipment submittals. Model changes can alter the electrical work.

The starting point

The menu and equipment choices shape the power plan.

A restaurant electrical installation depends on the actual appliances, not a generic list of kitchen outlets. Cooking equipment, dishwashing, water heating and refrigeration can have different supply and connection requirements. Final equipment selections should be reviewed before circuits and connection points are set.

For an existing restaurant, determine which loads stay, which equipment moves and what must remain operating. Restaurant electrical load calculations belong with that equipment review and the assessment of the building's existing distribution.

Scope of work

Coordinate the kitchen and the front of house.

1

Review equipment submittals

Collect model numbers and electrical requirements for cooking, dishwashing, refrigeration and service equipment. Record substitutions before they affect rough-in.

2

Check power distribution

Review voltage, phase, documented load and proposed equipment with the existing panels and service. Identify upstream changes before procurement depends on them.

3

Locate connection points

Coordinate receptacles, disconnects and fixed connections with equipment placement, clearances and manufacturer instructions.

4

Define hood interfaces

Coordinate the electrical interface with the hood, ventilation and fire-suppression contractors. Assign design, connection and testing responsibilities explicitly.

5

Plan customer-facing systems

Coordinate dining and task lighting, POS terminals, data pathways and approved security or audio connections with the operating layout.

6

Sequence and verify

Plan shutdowns around food storage and operations. Coordinate electrical inspections and equipment checks with the other project approvals.

Project handoff

Keep the equipment and circuit records together.

The operator needs to know what serves each appliance and which team maintains each system.

Equipment schedule

Connect the selected appliance models to the agreed electrical scope.

Circuit directory

Identify circuits and connection points serving the kitchen and support equipment.

Interface records

Document agreed hood, controls and specialist-system handoff points.

Project documentation

Keep electrical inspection records and installed-product information with the project files.

Project scenarios

Three restaurant starting points.

The condition of the space and the equipment changes matter more than an assumed construction duration.

Equipment replacement

One appliance can change the circuit

Review the new model

A new oven, dishwasher or coffee machine may require a different supply or connection. Compare the new submittal with the existing circuit before delivery.

Existing restaurant

Remodel around operations

Protect the operating sequence

Identify retained refrigeration and other critical equipment. Phase the work and agree outage arrangements with the operator before construction starts.

New restaurant

Build out the full distribution

Coordinate the whole kitchen

Develop the electrical scope with the kitchen, ventilation and life-safety designs. Confirm the service and distribution requirements before treating the space as ready for equipment.

Electrical work does not by itself establish health, fire or overall occupancy approval. Coordinate the responsible trades and agencies for the actual project.

FAQ

Restaurant electrical questions before rough-in.

Provide the current model-specific equipment sheets, kitchen layout and any existing electrical drawings. Voltage, phase, electrical rating and connection instructions are useful starting points. If an appliance is still undecided, mark that decision as open.

Review the substitute before purchase. Similar kitchen functions do not guarantee matching electrical requirements. A changed model may alter the circuit, connection location or upstream load review.

The electrical, hood, mechanical and fire-suppression scopes must agree on the required sequence and connection points. Specialist testing and approval responsibilities should be identified in the project documents rather than assumed to be included in a general electrical allowance.

It depends on which circuits and systems are affected. Identify refrigeration, food storage and operating areas that cannot lose power, then agree any temporary arrangements and shutdown windows with the operator.

They can be included if the terminal locations and vendor requirements are defined. Assign network configuration, payment equipment setup and operational testing to the appropriate vendor or IT team.

Use the actual product documentation when defining the connection. Equipment suitability and installation instructions matter alongside its nominal electrical rating. OSHA's electrical equipment requirements also address ratings, installation and use.

Questions worth a closer look

From a short answer to a practical plan.

Explore the causes, tradeoffs and records behind these common project questions.

Can a used appliance’s plug tell us the electrical connection it needs?

No. Use the actual nameplate and model-specific installation documents, and have uncertain modifications reviewed by qualified service personnel. Confirm voltage, phase and connection requirements before moving or buying the appliance.
