Bathroom Remodeling in Redwood City
The typical Redwood City home dates to 1969. Its bathroom code dates to 2026.
Redwood City adopted the 2025 California codes on January 1, 2026, and publishes its own bathroom remodel requirements. We remodel bathrooms here under one license, with permits, rough-in inspections and the final booked through eTRAKiT.

WHAT A REDWOOD CITY BATHROOM NEEDS
The city's checklist, before the tile.
Redwood City's Kitchen, Bath and Laundry Remodel Requirements, revised January 2026, spell out what an inspector checks: shower size, fan airflow, circuits, glass and fixture flow rates. Residential interior remodels qualify for the city's One-Stop plan review, so a complete set of plans can be approved while you wait.
Shower size
At least 1,024 square inches inside and able to fit a 30 inch circle, with a 22 inch clear exit and safety glass on doors and on windows within 60 inches.
Water-saving fixtures
Toilets at 1.28 gallons per flush, showerheads at 2.0 gpm, lavatory faucets at 1.2 gpm. Older fixtures elsewhere in the house may need replacing under SB 407.
Ventilation
A fan moving at least 50 CFM, ducted outside at least 3 feet from openings, switched apart from the lights unless a humidistat runs it.
Electrical
A 20 amp receptacle circuit, GFCI and tamper-resistant outlets, an outlet within 3 feet of each basin and at least one light on a vacancy sensor.
Valves and walls
Pressure-balanced or thermostatic valves limited to 120 degrees, and nonabsorbent finishes to 6 feet. Purple board cannot take tile directly in a shower.
Water heater switch
If the gas water heater is replaced, Redwood City pays $500 and WestLight Energy adds its own heat pump rebate. We add the 240 volt circuit in-house.

WHAT TRIPS UP REDWOOD CITY REMODELS
Problems Redwood City homeowners run into, and how we plan around them.
From the city's building FAQs, inspection page and remodel requirements.
Inspection slots are days out, and the phone line is going away.
Inspections are requested online the moment work is ready to cover, since the city schedules 3 to 8 days ahead.
Permit questions by email take days to answer.
Plans, scope and application go in complete, which avoids the back-and-forth the city warns can take up to 3 days per reply.
Opening the ceiling triggers hardwired smoke alarms.
Interconnected, hardwired smoke and CO alarms are priced into the scope whenever finishes come off and wiring is reachable.
An old toilet elsewhere in the house holds up the final.
Every fixture in the home is checked against SB 407 at the site visit, so replacements are planned, not discovered.
Contractors cannot work weekends without a 30-day request.
Schedules run on weekdays from the start, and any weekend work is requested well ahead in writing.
Demolition uncovers unpermitted past work.
Unpermitted work must be legalized with plans, and inspectors may ask for finishes to be opened, so suspect areas are flagged before the quote.

Do I need a permit to remodel a bathroom in Redwood City?
Yes, for any new or changed building, electrical, plumbing or mechanical work. Redwood City exempts only work listed in CBC 105.2, such as painting and flooring, and like-for-like swaps such as outlets and switches in the same locations. Moving a fixture or adding a circuit needs a permit.
What size does a shower have to be in Redwood City?
At least 1,024 square inches of finished interior area and able to contain a 30 inch circle, under CPC 408.6 as listed in the city's remodel requirements. The threshold must leave a 22 inch clear opening, and glass doors and partitions need safety glazing.
Can I get a same-day bathroom permit in Redwood City?
Yes, often. Residential interior remodels qualify for One-Stop plan review, held Monday to Thursday from 1 to 3pm in person or requested by email after an eTRAKiT submittal. Without it, the city lists residential alteration review at 3 to 4 weeks.
How do I schedule a building inspection in Redwood City?
Online through eTRAKiT. The city is phasing out its inspection phone line, schedules online requests 3 to 8 days ahead and inspects Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm, without guaranteed morning or afternoon slots.
Can contractors work on weekends in Redwood City?
No, not without approval. Contractors may work 7am to 8pm Monday to Friday; weekend or holiday work needs a request 30 calendar days ahead and written approval from the Building Official. Homeowners doing their own work may work weekends from 9am to 5pm.
Does Redwood City give a rebate for a heat pump water heater?
Yes. Redwood City pays homeowners $500 for replacing a gas water heater with a heat pump model bought July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027, plus up to $500 for a required panel upgrade. WestLight Energy's own rebate can be added on top.
