The key decision
Read the effective date and the qualifying event, not only the headline.
The code year can be misleading
The 2025 California code edition became effective in 2026. A contractor and homeowner discussing “the latest code” should identify the actual edition and the application date. Local requirements still need checking.

Old incentive articles need extra care
Federal home-energy credit deadlines changed. The IRS now states that section 25C does not cover property placed in service after December 31, 2025, section 25D does not cover expenditures after that date, and section 30C does not cover property placed in service after June 30, 2026.
Check the administrator at the decision point
A saved article is a starting point. Before purchasing or installing equipment, read the program’s current eligibility, reservation and documentation rules. A local rebate may have a different timeline from a federal credit; one does not establish eligibility for the other.
Put it into practice
Choose your starting point
| News item | Date to distinguish | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Building standards | Edition versus effective date | Confirm the code for the application |
| Tax credit | Purchase, installation or other qualifying event | Use current IRS guidance |
| Local rebate | Reservation and completion deadlines | Read the program agreement |
| Utility program | Enrollment and equipment compatibility | Confirm the exact account and product |
