The key decision
Ask for the applicable requirement and its project-specific trigger before accepting “it is code” as a complete explanation.
Begin with the edition and scope
California’s 2025 Building Standards Code took effect January 1, 2026. The year in a code title is not necessarily the calendar year it first applies. Record the applicable edition with the project documents instead of copying a detail from an old article.
Ask what triggers the requirement
A new building, an addition and a limited alteration can have different requirements. Equipment replacement also does not automatically mean the whole home must be rebuilt to every current provision. Ask which part of the proposed work triggers each requested measure.
Separate approval from interpretation
A contractor’s explanation, a product brochure and a permit approval are different records. Keep the actual plan notes, written city response or inspection correction connected to the scope. That makes later changes easier to evaluate.
Put it into practice
Choose your starting point
| Term you hear | Meaning to clarify | Useful follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Title 24 | California’s building standards framework | Which part and edition? |
| Energy Code | Energy-related requirements within Title 24 | Which compliance documents apply? |
| CALGreen | Green building requirements in Part 11 | Which mandatory measures or local provisions? |
| Inspection correction | A finding on the inspected work | Which detail or requirement needs correction? |
Bring this to the conversation
