The key decision

A replacement plan starts with the exact light, controller and power-supply models. Confirm a supported combination and the full installed scope before buying a newer-generation part.

A newer part may not preserve an older installation

A Reddit owner of Govee H705B lights asked whether a replacement controller or power supply could still be obtained after struggling to find one. The account describes a purchasing and support problem, not verified proof that every source had no stock or that the owner's diagnosis was correct. A similar-looking current product is not automatically the replacement.

Once the service provider has established what failed, the next decision is whether a supported repair can preserve the installed system. Obtain the exact required part identification before comparing a component replacement with a complete system change. The fault-finding process is covered separately in the related guide to dead sections.

Match product generations before placing an order

Govee's Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 page identifies H705D, H705E and H705F and states incompatibility with the first-generation H705A/B/C lights. Its extension note applies only to H705D/H705E, limits the resulting run to 150 feet and says that this product cannot be cut. Those are model-specific restrictions, not rules for every Govee system.

Use the same discipline for a controller or adapter: request manufacturer confirmation for the exact installed lights and proposed replacement. A connector that physically fits does not establish matching output, control protocol or permitted run length. Do not interpret an extension accessory's compatibility statement as approval for an unrelated controller.

Compare the complete installed options

If the exact part is available and supported, the scope can include replacement, access and verification of the retained lights. If it is unavailable, ask which complete compatible assembly would have to change. That might alter mounting, cable routes, light spacing or the visible result. A full replacement quote should identify which existing items can actually remain.

Separate current availability from a promise of future availability. Record the manufacturer response date, product identifier and any stated warranty terms. A seller's live listing is not a guarantee that spares will remain available throughout the installed system's life. Keep an authorized service route and proof of purchase with the owner record.

Illustrative comparison: a supported part versus a new system

Imagine that one provider proposes the documented replacement adapter for the installed model while another proposes a newer complete kit. Compare the complete scope: required components, elevated access, mounting changes, disposal and commissioning. A lower component price alone cannot establish which option costs less to put back into service.

Before approving the new kit, review a representative light sample and how its spacing fits the existing roofline. The owner may prefer a supported repair that preserves the appearance, or a complete change with different features. That is an explicit purchasing decision, not a consequence to discover after the old equipment has been removed.

Record settings and test the agreed result

Save accessible schedule and scene information before authorized changes. Ask the provider how the exact system handles account transfer, pairing and settings migration. Do not assume every controller replacement loses settings or that every app restores them automatically.

At completion, demonstrate the owner's access, everyday scene, required zones and scheduled shutoff. Record the installed model numbers and supported configuration. These are acceptance checks for the agreed service, not claims that a particular manufacturer's settings fail during replacement.

Common questions

How are permanent LED systems serviced?

Identify the installed light, controller and power-supply models and the symptom; app, schedule and hardware problems need different checks. If a component failed, confirm a manufacturer-supported replacement combination before ordering; newer generations may be incompatible. If a complete assembly must change, quote its access and mounting work separately, then verify owner access, scenes and schedules after installation.

Does a newer controller work with older permanent lights?

Only when the manufacturer confirms compatibility with the exact installed models and configuration. Matching connectors and the same brand do not establish compatibility.
