The Camera App Is Offline: Is the NVR Still Recording?

Remote viewing can fail while local recording continues, or both can fail from a shared power or network problem.

The Camera App Is Offline: Is the NVR Still Recording?: Remote app fails, local view works; All cameras fail together; Only router has backup

Compare three conditions: remote app fails while local view works; all cameras fail together; only the router has backup. Each requires its own verification.

The key decision

Prove recording continuity by playing the saved timeline across the outage. Local recording needs powered cameras, a working local network path and a healthy recorder; internet access is a separate dependency for remote viewing.

Offline is an interface description

When the phone app cannot reach a recorder, determine whether the failure affected remote viewing, the local camera path or recording itself. The label offline cannot distinguish them.

A Reddit RLN16-410 owner reported losing both recordings and the local monitor’s camera views during an ISP outage. The cameras connected through external Deco mesh nodes rather than directly to the NVR. The post does not prove the cause, but it identifies a local path that must be checked instead of assuming that only the internet connection failed.

Separate camera-to-recorder communication from phone-to-system communication. A cloud relay outage, internet failure, local switch failure, and recorder shutdown can all look similar from outside the property.

Check local evidence through authorized access

If the system supports a local monitor or approved local interface, inspect live video and recording there. Then review a saved interval covering the reported outage. A live image proves only that the view is available now, not that it was recorded continuously while the app was unavailable.

Document camera power, switch power, recorder power, storage health, and the route between them. A backup supply covering only the internet router may leave the recorder or cameras unpowered. The plan must name the loads it actually supports.

Draw the actual camera-to-recorder route. An external mesh node or switch can remain physically powered yet stop forwarding traffic; directly connected NVR ports have a different dependency path. Compare camera groups, link state and timestamps. If recordings matter to an incident, preserve them before resets or storage changes.

Illustrative scenario: internet down, local clips intact

Imagine the household cannot connect from a phone using cellular data, but the local recorder shows cameras and later plays the complete outage interval. That evidence supports continued local recording during that specific internet loss. It does not prove operation during utility failure.

If all cameras went offline together, investigate shared switches, supplies, and recorder paths before treating every camera as defective. Preserve logs and timing to identify a common cause.

Reolink’s PoE support documentation illustrates the distinction: a camera connected directly to its NVR can retain local viewing, playback and recording-schedule controls without an external network, while app access requires the appropriate network connection. Treat that as a documented example for the covered equipment, not a guarantee for every recorder. Confirm the equivalent operating modes for the actual model and firmware.

Commission outage behavior deliberately

Under a planned test, interrupt the relevant internet path while leaving the local system powered. Verify local recording, unavailable remote functions, and recovery. Test power-backup behavior separately if it is included in scope.

The acceptance report should state the duration and exact conditions tested. Include playback and export, not merely an online status after restoration. Keep remote access secured with supported methods and review owner account recovery as part of handover.

Put it into practice

A decision table to keep handy

Observed conditionWhat it distinguishesEvidence or next action
Remote app fails, local view worksRemote path may be the failed stageReview saved footage across the outage interval
All cameras fail togetherShared power or network may be involvedMap switches, supplies, and recorder connections
Only router has backupRecording chain may remain unprotectedIdentify every required powered component

Common questions

Will recording continue when the internet is down?

A supported local NVR can continue recording without internet when camera power, the local network path, recorder and storage remain operational. Remote viewing may still fail. Verify the exact setup with a controlled internet-loss test and playback spanning the interruption; power loss needs a separate backup test.
