Share a Matter Device With a Second Ecosystem Without Resetting the House
Multi-admin sharing can add another controller, but it does not merge every routine, account, or network into one system.

The key decision
Matter multi-admin adds controller relationships to the same device. It does not copy household routines or merge Thread networks, so control ownership and account access still need deliberate choices.
Another controller is not another copy of the household
Matter multi-admin sharing with a second ecosystem can add a useful control surface. It does not automatically merge routines, permissions, or Thread networks, so test the required functions and assign automation ownership before expanding the shared setup.
A Reddit owner asked whether adding devices to more hubs would improve reliability after rebuilding a Thread network. The question mixes two goals: additional controllers and a more resilient network path. Multi-admin sharing addresses the first; it does not by itself prove the second.
Matter supports multiple administrators through separate controller relationships. That does not mean schedules or permissions are automatically identical everywhere. It also does not guarantee that multiple Thread border routers form one network.

Use the supported sharing path
For an already commissioned accessory, start its supported sharing flow in a controller that already manages it. Home Assistant’s Share device flow provides a QR or sharing code for the second platform. Use that current sharing session rather than assuming the original packaging code alone will add another administrator. Keep the working controller until the added relationship is verified.
Record which platform owns each automation. Two controllers issuing the same bedtime action may be harmless initially but become contradictory after one schedule changes. Shared manual access and duplicated automation ownership should be deliberate choices.
Home Assistant’s documentation notes that the Matter standard expects each device to support at least five fabrics simultaneously, meaning separate Matter controller relationships. That is not five user accounts or five Thread networks. Check the installed device’s actual fabric capacity and existing memberships before removing one; do not factory-reset the whole device merely to tidy an account list.

Illustrative scenario: Apple phones and an additional assistant
Imagine a household wants its existing lights available from another voice platform. The desired result is an additional control surface, not a recreation of all scenes and schedules. Share a test device, verify its required functions, and decide where automation remains authoritative.
If a feature is unavailable in the second ecosystem, document the limitation rather than replacing the original integration prematurely. Confirm how a controller can be removed later without disrupting the others, using the platform’s supported process.

Treat access as an owner decision
Each added controller creates another administrative relationship and possible account-recovery dependency. Record who can administer it and how obsolete access is removed. Store setup and recovery information securely.
Acceptance should include commands from both intended ecosystems, a change in one platform’s automation, and removal of a temporary test controller if appropriate. The owner should know whether a failure affects device networking, one controller, or both. A successful second pairing alone does not establish that distinction.

Put it into practice
A decision table to keep handy
| Observed condition | What it distinguishes | Evidence or next action |
|---|---|---|
| Second app needs manual access | Sharing may be sufficient | Test required controls on one device first |
| Both platforms run schedules | Conflicting ownership is possible | Assign one owner for each automatic action |
| Extra hub added for resilience | Controller sharing is not network redundancy | Document controller and Thread roles separately |

Common questions
Can my Apple-family household add Alexa for the kids?
Compatible Matter devices can be shared with more than one supported ecosystem using the platform sharing process. Confirm that both platforms expose the functions the household needs. Non-Matter equipment requires a supported integration or bridge, and access is not automatic. Assign one owner to each routine so two platforms do not issue conflicting commands.
