City permit directory: find the right office before starting an application

Use the jurisdiction search to reach official instructions and prepare a focused permit inquiry.

THE KEY POINT

Confirm the parcel’s reviewing agency before selecting an application form.

Confirm the parcel, not just the mailing city

The City Permit Directory links to official agency resources. Its detailed city index covers San Mateo and Santa Clara counties, with additional county starting points for other areas YKCA serves. That coverage is described on the page so you can tell a detailed entry from a broader starting point.

A postal city or ZIP code does not by itself establish which agency reviews the work. Confirm whether the property is in an incorporated city or an unincorporated county area. If the parcel is outside the detailed index, use the official county or city resources to identify the correct authority rather than choosing the nearest listed city.

Use the search and read the entry note

Search the city or county and use the county selector to narrow the list. Read the note before following the link: some entries lead to a permit portal, others to instructions or a department contact page. An entry marked for limited verification should prompt a fresh check, not an assumption that its application route is settled.

Once on the official site, confirm the page is current and look for the checklist for your actual scope. A general building page is only the starting point. A minor alteration, structural change and utility service project can require different documents and coordination.

Ask a question an agency can answer

Prepare the project address, a short existing-versus-proposed description and a list of affected systems. Say whether the work changes structure, exterior, equipment or service connections. Ask which permit type, drawings and outside approvals are needed, and where the application belongs.

Include a parcel number or sketch when useful and when the agency accepts it. Keep personal records in the official submission channel. Do not rely on an answer to a vague question about “a small remodel” if the actual project includes several trades or changes of use.

Understand the milestones after submission

An application receipt, approved drawings and an issued permit are different states. Ask what remains before construction can begin, when inspections must be requested and what closes the permit. If utility coordination is required, track that separately.

Use the Approval Timelines worksheet to organize agency estimates once you have them. The directory does not submit an application, promise approval or replace the agency’s current instructions. Its value is a shorter route to the correct source and a better-prepared first inquiry.

A useful question

Does the permit directory tell me which permit my project needs?

It provides official starting points. Confirm parcel jurisdiction and send the agency your actual scope to establish the required permit, documents and outside approvals.
